10 Questions: with Warren Millar

1 – Tell us about yourself
My name is Warren Millar, Im from Widnes Cheshire U.K. Been into photography since my teens (which was a long time ago as im in my 50s now!) I was a Police C.S.I and Crime Scene Photographer for over 20 years and have probably photographed things which most people would never see in a life time! . Im now very happy photographing gigs and festivals both local and not so local and Im a submitting photographer with “Getintothis” web based music  blog here in the North West of the U.K. Im also in  house photographer at “The Studio”  a great little music venue in my home town Widnes. I have run three successful Gig Photography Workshops at “The Studio” For “Fujiholics” and have another in April this year.

2 – Where did your journey with gig photography start?
It all Started back in 2010 when I was asked to photograph a charity gig at “The Studio” in aid of one of my sons best friends who tragically committed suicide in his teens.  I’ve always been a massive music fan but found that also photographing live music felt like I was doing the two things I love the most. I started going “The Studio” at all the gigs they put on there and the people who run the place were and still are lovey and now I’m there whenever I can get there to photograph the gigs. I’ve even had my own exhibition there.

3 – In a world of ever changing technology, do you think it is important that gig photographers still shoot gigs?
I really do think it’s important. An image can freeze a moment at a gig which otherwise would just be a memory in punters minds and a memory that may become lost or forgotten. So yeah  very important.

4 – What do you get asked most as a photographer?
“What Camera do you use”  I usually answer “The one I have in my hand at the time”

5 – What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting gig photographer?Don’t worry too much about gear, and when you can spend money on fast glass. But most of all Enjoy

6 – What would be your dream gig and why?
Stone Roses, always loved these guys. Did photograph “The Happy Mondays” last year which is almost as good

7 – What is your hope for the future?
Just to keep on enjoying music photography , be that in an arena or small club venue Oh and love to exhibit some of my work again soon, Nothing like seeing your printed work in an exhibition.

8 – What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Be nice to Security PR people and other photographers in the pit, No one likes a knob !

9 – What is the worst advice you have ever been given?
Oh you need a full frame DSLR to take great gig images

10 – You’re a new addition to a crayon box, what colour would you be?
I’m an Evertonian BLUE !!
